I open the file and wmp opens. Then it says error downloading codec and it only plays the audio. Was the file downloaded improperly? Its a torrent. I didnt change any settings on bittornado.

Without knowing that codec it used, it's impossible to tell.

As for how to tell that codec it used... Try YAMB

If you want to play it, VLC is a versatile, all around player. If you want to convert it, try SUPER. Both freeware.

    And welcome to our forums.

Should be MPEG-4 Part2 or AVC. ffdshow can decode both. MediaInfo can tell you what streams an mp4 contains though.

Could be using H.264 for video, and you don't have a codec/splitter installed for it. If you have Quicktime 7 installed, try opening it in Quicktime's player, to see if it'll open using QT's support. As mentioned above, VLC will also work (probably a good idea, too, if you don't want to risk installing additional codecs just yet (and that includes Quicktime)). As an additional bonus, VLC should probably also be able to tell you more information about the file, such as what codec the file's using for video (which would help us, too. )

Edit: Ah, celtic_druid beats me to everything. ^_^

Some time back I had the same problem with WMP10 after updating Quicktime. My solution was to downgrade both WMP and Quicktime (I really find it unattractive to use anyway).
