Is it glitchy on one particular file, or on any file ?
Have you added, updated or replaced any codecs of late ?
Have you updated versions of late ?
If this a software lockup, or a full system lockup ?
What error messages, if any, do you get in your windows applicatioon error log ?

Glitchy isn't enough to diagnose a problem with.

Overheating can cause this type of behaviour. Encoding usually runs the CPU at redline for extended periods. If your machine is not ventilating properly, or as a layer of dust on the internals, you could be overheating the system.

Simple test - take the covers off the machine, and point a house fan into the guts. Run an encode. If all is well, put it all back and repeat. If it again locks, get a bigger CPU fan, clean out the insides, and make sure it ventilates well.
