LF-MB121JD, the first Blu-Ray DVD burner is available

We have just discovered the LF-MB121JD in the Panasonic building, the first Blu-Ray burner that reads and writes BD-R and BD-RE and reads BR-ROM too. Blank discs are available in 25 and 50 (Dual Layer) formats.

The writing speed is set at 2x (72Mbps). Panasonic seems to have chosen sides in the format war, and according to Kazuhiro Tsuga, Panasonic supports Blu-Ray and they say that this is the only technology that will give consumers a true HD experience.

    IO-DATA Blu-Ray burner

Panasonic announced their Blu-Ray burner today, and IO-DATA does the same... quite logical, because their burner is just a rebranded Pioneer drive! This BRD will be available in internal and external version. Before you go to the store to get one, pay a visit to your banker though, because the internal drive will cost 735 EUR and the external one will cost 810 EUR.

Rare to see Panasonic, Pioneer and Sony on the same page.

In theory external models would probably use Firewire800 or an external SATA connection.

I guess I should have kept up in this Blu Ray vs. HD DVD thing because Pioneer is in the blu ray camp? This is kinda shocking to me and between them and Sony I'm kinda finding myself leaning that way now.

Which CODECs are supported by Blu-ray Disc?

    * For Video: MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC, and VC-1
    * For Audio: LPCM, DTS, DTS-HD, Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus

Same as DTS but the HD obviously stands for High Definition, assuming its HD Audio.

    Highlights:

    – DTS Digital Surround® (DTS' core 5.1 technology) has been selected as mandatory audio technology for both Blu-ray Disc (BD) and High Definition Digital Versatile Disc (HD-DVD).

    – DTS-HD™ has been selected as an optional feature in both formats

    – DTS-HD™ is a set of extensions to DTS' Coherent Acoustics audio coding system which encompasses DTS Digital Surround®, DTS-ES 6.1 discrete, DTS Neo:6 and DTS 96/24.

    – DTS-HD™ is the only technology that will deliver lossless surround sound for these new disc formats, ensuring the highest quality audio performance available in the new standards.

    – As a mandatory technology in the next generation standards, a DTS decoder will be built into every HD-DVD or Blu-ray Disc player.

    – One single DTS-HD™ datastream on a disc can carry everything from standard DTS 5.1 playable on virtually all existing 280 million plus DTS decoders, all the way to lossless for next-generation systems.

So is DTS-HD higher than the max DTS we get on dvds these days?? Whats the max? 1100 or something? I know on a ton of DTS tracks its like 754 or so.

At least they are saying this HD version is SUPPOSED to be backward compatible on traditional DTS receivers. Of course I won't believe it until I see it

im asking if they will make a encoding software implementing all thos codecs without the need of too many programs such as different encoding programs

you only need one of each audio and video -- several program do all the video above ... nothing does all the audio supported

    it would be expensive
