    Hi Folks,

I have several AVIs that I want to convert and burn as DVDs.
However, when I try to play them using WMP (or convert them), I get told that it cannot play the file and after tracking down the error message's meaning have found that it's because I don't have the right codec installed.
This is no big problem, as I'm sure that I can download the right codec somewhere...

The problem is - I have NO IDEA what codec the AVIs use!
I've tried right-click -> Properties on the AVIs, and this tells me nothing exciting...

So my question is - is there a way of determining what codecs an AVI uses?

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks guys, but I've installed GSpot and it appears to be working fine on the majority of my AVIs.
However, there's 2 sets of AVIs that I've got that come up as "File Type: Unknown" and "Mime Type: Unknown"....

Any ideas on what may be causing this, or how I can get around it?

  6. Anybody knows if there is any program for check bitrate of mpeg file or VOB file? My first attempt of making DV to DVD was using iLife 05 suite and I feel like quality is not as great so just wanted to check the bitrate at which it encoded the video, if its less than 8mbps!!
Look like MediaInfo would do the job, apologies for posting before checking.

There are a number of bitrate viewers available in the tools section, although there appears to be varying accuracy.

Also, which version of GSpot are you using? The 'stable' release, or the latest beta version?
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

Quite a few formats can only be read by the beta, not the full final release (which is a couple years old now).
