  1. I am trying to copy my dad's dvd collection and I don't have a dvd writer drive. I use my computer's dvd player which outputs to my tv and surround sound system. Since I'm using my computer either way, it is probably equally convenient to use either vcd or divx to accomplish this. Which one do you prefer..... anyone? I don't want the movies to take up more than 2 cd's one woudl be prefereable

I have a saying "divx for quailty, vcd for versitility" since you will be using your computer either way use divx. It is fantastic for quailty and compression.I have settings which will give fantastic resaults over 2 cds. if you wish to compress to 1 cd I recommend tweaking the settings that come with it.

P.S. My 2 cd settings are that good that they can equal dvd quailty. Also always use 604x480 for your res as this will look better than 720x576.

The only advantage that vcd has over divx is that it can be played on a standalone dvd player, supports additional features such as menu's, and is simple to encode/author. Since you appear to be using neither additional features nor a dvd player it really comes down to two things.

Is your pc powerful enough to playback divx files in an acceptable quality?

    Are you comfortable encoding divx?

If the answer to both of these questions is yes than there is really no reason to not use divx. Divx is higher quality and smaller than vcd.

  4. divx has too major drawbacks. first, there are no standalone divx players. this means you can ONLY play your divx movies on the computer. on the other hand, almost every standalone dvd player plays VCD. second, if you're gonna play divx on the computer, you need a relatively powerful, fast computer. divx is like svcd in that both require some heavy CPU processing. if you have a slower computer, playing divx might be jumpy or take awhile to load. on the other hand, VCD is pretty light in terms of computer usage.
