  1. I need to convert 2 avi's to the same format so i can join and burn them to a dvd.

one was from a digital camera and so came off as mjpg avi's.
The other is a dv avi straight from a digital video camera.

To join them i need to get them the same. I know HOW to do this using virtualdub, but i cant decide which is the best format to convert them to.

I want one that will simple get them the same format, without losing any quality. What is regarded as the best codec for this?

    Hi bohboh,

Your choices are either the Morgan MJPEG (US$20) or the Panasonic DV Codec (free) - either of which provide excellent quality.

So I'd say go for the free one...

And, to boot, I've used it before with VirtualDub with no problems.

    Good luck.
There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

    Carpe diem.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room.

I have the dv codec installed and that was the first i tried, but i cant covert it, i get the following message...

    Cannot start video compression
The source image format is not acceptable
    (error code -2)

I assume that it cant convert mjpg to dv codec.

To save as DV avi, you must have a resolution of 720 x 480 at 29.976 fps for NTSC, or 720 x 576 at 25 fps for PAL.

Yep, think thats the problem. In gspot it says that the mjpg's are 320x240 . I have had a look in virtualdub, how do i go about changing it?

Use the 'resize' filter in VD.

Yep, spotted that under video filters.

Since i am scaling up i gave it a black border so's to not pixelate it too much. Virtualdub is pretty much all you need when it comes to video editing, especially as its free.
