I want to add a wav file midway through an avi,
I have tried virtualdub but it adds it to the beginning, is there a tool that can do this?

Virtualdubmod. Streams->stream List. Click add and select your audio file. Click OK. Streams -> Streams List. Right-click on the audio track and select Interleaving. Set the Audio Skew to shift the start point of the audio track. Make sure you are in Direct Stream Copy and save the new avi file.

Maybe a better way, with more options for your audio, if you don't mind using another tool. You can use the freeware audio editor Audacity and input your WAV to it.
Click at the end of the WAV and move the cursor to the end time of your video. Click 'Generate silence', and you should have a timeline the same length as your video. Select your WAV, then click 'Cut'. Move the cursor to where you want the WAV on the timeline and click 'ADD'. You can readjust the length of the timeline if you need. You can also duplicate the track if you need it on both channels. You can also fade in/fade out to keep the sound from being too abrupt. Save it as a WAV file, then add that back in to VirtualDub Mod to replace or add audio.
IMO, VDM does a better job of handling audio than the regular VD. If you already have a audio track, Audacity can insert the WAV in the track. It works just like a word processor. It can also filter, normalize and adjust volume, create pseudo stereo tracks and output WAV or MP3. (With the Lame encoder installed.) -
Tried both ways, ended up with a combination of both.
Firstly imported the wav file into audacity, then created a large block of "silence" at the begining, then fine tuned it using the audio skew within virtualdub. Dont know if this was the way to go, but it bloody worked!!!!!!
Thanks to you both.
