Ok, I did a search on this and had a few hits but nothing really right on the money. I built a DVR that runs Windoze MCE. There's a plugin available called My Movies (love it by the way). Basically I can store on my harddrive a complete movie and have My Movies pull it up from within MCE and play it. This is all great, but according to the plugin's website, it can play ANY movie type compatible with Windoze Media Player. So with that bit of knowledge I thought I could save hard drive space GREATLY by compressing my movies into DivX/XviD format. I have done this successfully with a couple of movies already but would like to take it a step further. Is there any way of including chapterpoints in the encoded movies so I can have DVD functionality like before? I would really like to just press the NEXT button on my remote and skip ahead a few minutes rather than FAST FORWARD through an hours worth of stuff I saw before I fell asleep. Any ideas?
If DivX/XviD doesn't support this, are there any other methods I could look into for creating compressed movies with chapters? I already know about VCDs and SVCDs, but would really like to have it self contained in 1 file, not in iso (cd image format), and have great quality.
Thanks!

AFAIK it's not the codec specifically that controls this but the container format. I'm pretty sure that .AVI does not support chapters, but .divx does. DivX Converter seems to be highly regarded for this, but I noticed the other day that there are more and more tools pooping up all over the place that claim to be able to handle chapters for divx.
Another alternative for you would be RatDVDIf in doubt, Google it. -
I'd suggest mkv. mp4 also supports chapters. DivX has the advantage of standalone compatibility (any actually out yet that support chapters though?), but if you are only using it on a HTPC, that doesn't matter.

DivxMediaBuilder is also listed in the tools section as being able to add menus etc to .divx files.

nero recode will do chapters also, and I think there are players that support it. thats nero digital. the chapters in svcd and even vcd are rudimentary and not to be compared with true chaptering in dvd. You could re-encode at 356x half D1 at less than half the bitrate. My advice would be to keep what you got and buy a 500gb disc (or two)
