  1. I found a page "Creating MPEG still images for VCD/SVCD" that would create a hi-res/lo-res muliplexed VCD image. The one problem is the tool is compiled under linux. A post on the forums did mention that the source code could be recompiled :

"The current source code base is pretty close
to be being able to compile under the cygwin32
on Windows. However, you have to kiss goodbye
to the capture stuff because that is very tightly
tied to the video4linux and linux MJPEG API's. "

Any programmers out there who could strip down MJPEGtools for just the stills encoding parts?

I have tried the 5.5.6.4 Nero and the menus leave a lot to be desired. I have also tried the Phillips tool kit but I couldn't get it to run on my system (e-machine 98SE).

    Ooops the links

    https://sourceforge.net/projects/mjpeg/ - MJPEGtool

    TIA,

  3. ...just wondering, whether there is any feedback? e.g. do the still images work for you? did uploading work with your browser? was it a good idea at all to make a web-mpeg-encoder page?

    hvr,

I've tried your encode page with a few images and it worked great. Comparing with other encoders I've been using I have to say that the quality is very good. In my opinion only Nero and Video Pack 5 produce better pictures (they both generate bigger files too). But then again, I have problems playing some Nero still mpeg files (authored with VCDImager) in my standalone player (Pioneer 525) and in WinDVD.

I'll do some additional tests and I would even set a Linux partition in my computer if I have to, but what I (or we) really need is a version of MJPEG Tools for Windows.

For now, thanks for your web encoder.

  5. well, as to the image quality... I use a default target size of 120kb for high-res images... but I'll make that configurable when I get to, so that you can try to experiment by yourself...
(or you can set up the required tools yourself...)

  6. well; no it's possible to tune the size parameters as well... lemme know, which values work good, and which don't... and whether you are able to get a better image quality now...

    hvr,

The size parameters seem to help a bit. I didn't have time to test in my standalone. More on that later...

Since eventually I'll have to do the enconding im my computer, I installed Linux and downloaded the MJPEG tools and netpbm, but I can't find ppmtoyuv4mpeg2. Where can I get it?

  8. until it (or something else, seems there's another tool named ppmtoy4m) get's included into the mjpegtools distribution, you'll have to get it from
