I found several recommendations here for this player, so I got it. It has so many issues with sound. My sound is distorted, tinny, and hissy. Nowhere in help or FAQ do they talk about this. In the VLC forums there are at least 5 threads on sound issues and all different suggestions to fix. Many people get solutions, but even more (including me) do not get a fix. Some even mention video display problems cropping up after days or weeks. A few days after my install still with bad sound my vid image would not work with a single mpg that displayed find with two other players. Then just yesterday I got no sound on another mpg that works fine with other players. All this with just one change to default which partially helps sound.

Unstable seems to be the word.

I've never had any problems like that with VLC running on quite a few computers. It sounds like a bad install. What OS are you running? It would be helpful to fill out your computer info as I have no idea what you are working with. Linux, Win 95 with 128 MB memory? Mac?

sorry, I meant to say xp pro w/sp1&2.

Since so many other users have this prob, it seems that it is VLC, although, I really can not yet rule out a bad install or bad download.

Did u look at the VLC forums? Here is the three that I went all the way thru:

There are at least two more sound threads that I did not go thru: http://forum.videolan.org/viewforum.php?f=14&sid=4cfe288c30b9168206eda8da75568433

VLC works well here. What format files are giving you trouble?

I'm not using it much for MPeg4 (some divx/xvid/wmv). It's fine with MPeg2, DV, ATSC SD/HD for simple preview.

And they all play fine with windows media player? If not it could be your sound system drivers.

From reading the links, it sounds like no one knows what causes the problems. I suspect it is more a problem with external drivers, programs than VLC directly. The clue is that it would seem to affect several different types of audio streams. Sorry, I know no cure.

To be honest, I do have problem with VLC occasionally not giving any sound output. However, I usually switch to BSPlayer when that happens, so I never really investigate what's causing the problem.

The links above traced the problem for some to bad nvidia onboard sound card audio codecs provided by windows update.

So many combinations of hardware, drivers and codecs.
