    Here's my setup:
    - P4 @ 1.8 GHz
    - 512 MB DDR 333Mhz RAM
    - ASUS MBoard
    - WD harddrives - IDE - 7200RPM
    - TV98 tuner/capture card on PCI - has the BT848 chip
    - freshly installed XP - only capturing software installed - no anti-virus
    - un-needed services stopped - RAM useage prior to capture = ~78MB

    - tried capturing from different sources...VHS on comp, Hi8 on S-Vid
    - capture software - Nero Vision Express 3
    - capture settings - 640x480, YUY2, 29.97 fps, compress to MPG2

Summary of problem...problem is consistent...tried it 6 or more times
    - before 23 mins of capturing, 0 frames dropped, peak CPU useage of 82%, RAM useage 167MB
    - sometime after 23mins, frames start dropping, and worsens over time...
    - 25mins - 6 frames dropped, CPU useage 69-83%
    - 26 mins - 35 frames dropped, CPU useage 69-85%
    - 27 mins - 150 frames dropped, CPU useage 60-80%
    - 29 mins - 700+ frames dropped, CPU useage 44-90%

In all this, the processor temp did not exceed 45 C. CPU not overclocked for this test.

What I have noticed, is that when the system is overclocked, it starts dropping frames around the same time, but at a much higher rate. Is my CPU faulty? Or maybe too much overclocking in the past? I have never seen the CPU temp exceed 50C, even when overclocked.

Any ideas, suggestions, or whatever, would be appreciated! Thanks.

Capture to mpeg using nero ... even at 640x480 you are pushing the system with a processor at 1800mhz , that need's to be up and over 2 gigahertz .

The processor is adequate if you capture to avi compressed format at that size , even full d1 res , then convert it later to mpeg2 using any one of the free encoder's like bbmpeg , quenc .. and other's .

Nero is not a good product for capture , consider using another product , one that is lighter on resource's when running .

You are also capturing at 29.97fps ... which will also add to your problem's and is why I recommend you capture into avi format and convert later .

A full movie using the right setup , can consume roughly about 3 to 4 gigabyte's at good quality .

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My old p3 800 , with only 128mb's memmory , and a 32 mpeg asus v6600 vivo was able , using the right setting's in vdub able to capture at full d1 resolution at 25fps , and rarely broke the 70% cpu usage barrier and never a dropped frame or audio sync issue ... even had it working under xp without problem's .

Pity , it was a very good card that thing .

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overclocking is never a good idea and can , no , will cause problem's later .

Also check if you power supply has been running warmer than when first purchased , it to can cause issue's ... I have had them blowing very hot air on occassion ... soon after , they expire ... and wouldnt you know it , the last one expired a day after the warrantee ran out ...

Sounds like either the ram is being overtaxed, or the cpu. Just for giggles, try booting into safe mode and doing the capture. There are quite a few windows processes that always run in the background, and they could be kicking in during the capture process and eating up ram.
