I'm not sure, but maybe the problem is not the XML but the SRT file? Could you check if another (or empty) srt file produces the same error with the above XML?

I opened the subtitles file in the notepad
they are in English...and my XML uses charset ISO-8859-1
could that be the problem ? -
I have tested your xml (just copied from the above post and saved as text file). Using a srt file from myself (renamed to subtitle.srt and put into the same directory) -> No problems:

Maybe your srt file is coded in unicode (you cannot see this in notepad, as notepad would recognise the unicode coding and show it as 'normal text')
Try the following:
Open the srt file in wordpad (not notepad!)
Save it again with 'Save as' and select 'Text Document' as filetype (if it is unicode the default filetype would be 'Unicode Text Document')GUI for dvdauthor:
