I just ripped a dvd to svcd. The video is perfect. The audio however has a crackling noise in the backgroud. I used dvdx and tmpgenc. What would be the best way to fix this?

TMPGenc doesn't do a great job of dealing with sample rate conversion (48kHz -> 41kHz) required by the SVCD format. One solution is to use an external application like SSRC (see the Tools list). It acts as a plugin to TMPGenc (Option-> Environmental Setting-> External Tool-> Sampling Frequency Converter).

I also get cracking in the audio when I approach the maximum bitrate of my DVD player.

Ok, so whats the best way to rip out the bad audio and put the fixed audio in? Also, i don't see ssrc in the tools section.

You don't need to "rip" the audio. Just put SSRC in as an external processor and it will automatically convert the audio instead of using the default TMPGenc converter.

So are you saying I have to make my svcd all over again, using ssrc? Or is there a way i can do the audio seperately?

  10. hrm..also consider the source audio from the original DVD. at first, i thought the crackling was due to tmpgenc's downsampling. however, i later found out the original audio has it.

i.e. when i ripped Deep Impact, i used dvd2avi rip the default track 1. however, the track was only 192 kbits/s. this track had the crackling. however, when i selected the next track, i was able to rip the 448 kbits/s audio, which had no crackling in it.

so make sure the crackling doesn't originate from the source before you go through the trouble of downsampling it externally from tmpgenc.
