specific dvd ripper required?

hi,
I'm looking for a program for converting VOB files into .avi

I have already tried imTOO dvd ripper but the picture is too small-
i.e the black widescreen lines at the top and the bottom are too big.

i'm looking for a program that would
1. let me choose my ouput size (e.g. 350mb for 42min of vdeo)
and
2. let me keep the resolution of the vob i am converting.

Virtualdubmod or virtualdubmpeg2 will do the trick

Check out my frameserving guide for vdub , all you need for that .
this allow's for some filtering and modification of codec's used to compress .

Or good old dvdx (people forget about it) ... not as feature rich , but simplest .

i downloaded virtualdub 1.6.14 and it won't open VOB files.
is there any way to fix this?

Read Yoda's message again. You didn't get either item he recommended.

You could also use dvd2avi and use TMPGenc for your encoding. Good old standby when all else fails for me.
