  1. My computer always turns back on about ten minutes after I turn it off. Anybody know why? It's really annoying.

    Thanks

Just for interest, my old motherboard was causing a similar thing. The capacitators were shot, besides some other weird stuff, my PC would boot when ever it liked.

    Cheers,
    Bob.

Some time back, while working on my powered off PC box, the phone rang - and my PC started up.

So it may be not just the Wake on LAN setting (monitoring the RJ-45 connection) that does it.

Yes, check throughout your BIOS settings for these two conditions.

  6. Don't forget about the power supply. It too can cause odd behavior.

AFAIK as well as wake on LAN there is Wake on Modem Ring, which is probably what caused your scenario as described above.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  8. If you turn it off in the back or at the power strip, it can't come back on.

When I had a modem connect in my old box, it used to hang when the phone rung.

    Jimmalenko is right.

(I just couldn't remember the term/words to look for in the BIOS.)

Can you imagine my surprise when I had my machine open, plugged in and looking around in its guts when the phone rang and the machine turned on?

That's when I learned about the Wake on ... features!
