    is it possible to get the files off the game using your computer then ftp the game to your xbox? my dvd drive doesn't seem to be working, i always get the msg, unknown disc for any game. and i have tried cleaning it.

    Yes but it needs to be modded. Though you could just copy your game files to a memory card. If you can still get into the microsoft menu screen then you just copy and paste the game files to your memory card (through the adapter slot on your controller).

    Not exactly as written, it isn't possible, no. "Normal" DVD-ROM drives in PCs won't read XBOX games because they're written from the outside in. There's an interesting mod of DVD-ROM drives regarding reversing the polarity of the power supply to the laser unit to get it to read from outside in on the net (in the case where you need to replace your XBOX's DVD drive) but I've got my doubts as to if a PC would then be able to work with it.

    However, you could FTP files from an XBOX's DVD Drive to a PC and then FTP them back onto your hard drive in your XBOX, but you'd need to find someone else with a working DVD drive. I'm not sure off the top if stock / unmodded XBOXs can be FTP-ed to out of the box though.

    would it just be easier to buy a new dvd drive for my xbox? its what? 30 bucks on ebay?

    yes you probably need a new drive
    You can try cleaning it and it might work and you might not have to get a new drive
