I made a video with a dv camera, copied it to a dvd with a dvd recorder. I then used the dv tape over and dont have that video on tape anymore. I need to convert the dvd back to a file either avi or mpg so I can edit it in Sony Vegas Movie Studio. I need a program that can do this. Thanks

Couldn't he just transfer the VOB file to his hard drive and change the extension from .vob to .mpg?

If you really need to convert to AVI, I might use VirtualDub Mod. You can put the VOBs directly into the program and convert them to DV format for easy editing. You would need to install a DV codec. Panasonic DV Codec works well.
A better option might be to use a MPEG editor, maybe the freeware editor Cuttermaran or similar that can use MPEG video directly, though you would have to demux it to elementary streams with that program. You can convert the DVD VOBS to MPEG with a program like VOB2MPG. This will result in no loss in quality.
Or maybe Vegas can use the VOB2MPG converted video?
