    I need a good multi video file player with variable speed fast forward. wmp has this, but it only works for wmv files.

    The freeware VLC Media Player will do that and plays most anything. Use Shift and the '+' key to speed up. To slow back down, use the '-' key. It also has a lot of other features and uses it's own codecs, so usually nothing more to install.

    An even more configurable player, especially the pay version, is Zoom Player. It also has a feature limited freeware version you can try out. You can assign keys or the mouse wheel to different adjustments, including speed control. You can preset the FF rate or vary it. It does needs installed codecs. Both players can also play DVDs.

    VLC only appears to do 1X, 2X, etc. (could be an option to change this) and doesn't appear to do audio.

    mplayer can do much smaller percentage speed increases (default is 1.1/0.9091) and plays with audio. Doesn't keep the pitch though, so you end up with chipmonk audio.
