I'm not sure if this really qualifies as news, but this is the first time I've seen a store advertising any of the Next-gen video formats. The canadian Best Buy site has a page with information about the new formats as well as Players and Movies which are available for Pre-order. information can be seen here

pantangs - Wait and see what happens. The cost of discs, players and recorders will start out sky high. Worse, nobody knows if there is actually any demand for either format. I have a feeling that they are both going to tank, although it seems to me that HD-DVD might have the best chance for success. I've read some things about Blu Ray that make me think it's not really ready for release, not even by the proposed date later this year.

I think Nero supposedly already supports writing to HD-DVD discs, but until the discs come out and people can test them, no one really knows what this will be like. Also, we're going to need new authoring applications to make HD-DVDs and I have a feeling that they aren't going to be cheap.

  4. Thanks i will take your advice and see how all this new stuff works out.I just wouldnt want to burn all my kids videos then have to do them all over again. The new tecnology sort of has us by our family jewels at times.we either go with it or get lost in the shuffle.I have only had my pioneer 533 hs recorder for a few months and now i find its not the main stream.I do get excited with new electronics but boy it gets very costly wanting all the new gadgets out there.I may just put my kids videos on double layer dvds since pioneer has the ability to do that.

  5. You still will be able to play regular DVDs on the HD or Blue-Ray players. The only difference would be how much of the DVD quality video you can store on HD or Blue-Ray DVD. Obviously you will be able to record a lot more video at high bit rate (not HD) to the new DVDs.

Yes, and your valuable home video footage is just that: VIDEO. It's most likely Standard Definition also, unless you happen to have enough $$$ to have gotten an HDV-type camera (or are referring to 8/super8/16 mm film).
So it's not like you'll get a better image by tranferring/encoding/authoring to the new technology (with a few exceptions). It's already giving you pretty much ALL that can be gotten with StdDef Consumer video electronics.
What you will have transferred NOW should still be valid (and migrate-able).

  10. They have been promoting HD-DVD for some time now. I pre-ordered the Toshiba HD-DVD player from BestBuy like three weeks ago.
