Worker decapitated in Pittsburgh elevator accident, officials say

PITTSBURGH - A construction worker was decapitated by an elevator car Thursday morning when he peered into a freight-elevator shaft, police said.

The 44-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was apparently waiting for the elevator, authorities said. He was an employee of a subcontractor that was doing work for Massaro Corp.

The accident happened shortly before 8 a.m. at the site of a former warehouse that is being converted into 140 apartments for students at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. The nine-story, $15 million project is expected to be completed in June 2007.

Joseph Massaro III, president of Massaro Corp., said the elevator operator did not know the man was peering into the shaft. Workers at the site use walkie-talkie-type phones to communicate with each other, Massaro said.
