Reading a post of Mackem's in the "Things You Can't Do" post, I couldn't help but think... "Wow. Getting your head crushed in vice would be an awfully painful way of dying."

Anyone have any others?

Vlad the Impaler would hire "doctors" to impale his emenies. The impaling process would start with a pike driven from you backside, though your body, and out near the base of the victims neck. The goal of the "doctor" was to miss all vital organs so the victim was alive. Then the pike would be put into the ground pointing up.... with the victim still on it...alive... for a few days.

ALS - The psychological pain would be unbearable. You would basically have all your cognitive functions and have to watch as your motor functions disappeared.

The most painful torture still known today is the water drop machine. You tie a person down and place a box to hold the head facing up. Tilt the body so the legs are lightly elevated. Lightly cut the forehead, almost like a deep papercut. Place a large bucket of SALT water (best if kept constantly stirred), with a tap set to 1 drop of water every 3 seconds with the drop landing on the or near the cut. The next day adjust the tap to 1 drop every 4 seconds. the next day 1 drop every 5 seconds. the 4th day start back at the 3 second point. People who were allowed to go free, after 5-6 days straight of this, would go permanently insane. If subjected to 2 or more weeks straight of this torture and then allowed to go free, the victim often committed suicide soon after.

With the excecption of some sort of torture, I think that it is generally believed that burning is the most painful form of death. (ain't pretty either) It also depends on the severity of the burns.

I remember a video a friend of mine showed to me two years ago about the death of
russian soldier in Chechenya, I must say I got sick when I watched and "heard" the
young guy making sounds while he was being beheaded in vivid colors.

I will try to describe what I saw:

A russian soldier was on the ground with his hands tied in the back while a muslim was standing over him with his combat boot on the young man's head, you can clearly see a knife in the hands of the muslim, suddenly the guy standing stabs the soldier in the neck and you hear a cry, the muslim then starts cutting the russian soldier's neck and a lot of blood is seen coming out of the injure (the pain sounds from the young guy's throat is mixed with blood) seconds later the head is separated from the body.

I'd say being forced to watch a Pauly Shore movie and then kicking the bucket permanently. That would give you nightmares for eternity

I think the most mentally painful way to die would be to be buried alive ... in a dark coffin that gives you a little room to move around but no way to get out. It would be especially painful if the coffin had a small pipe connecting it to the surface (to allow for airflow so you wouldn't suffocate). It would take days to die and, in the end, you'd be stuck in a small box and forced to smell your own urine, feces, and possibly vomit.

That form of torture was used on one gangster in the film, "Casino." But, they took pity on him after an eyeball popped out and just slit his throat.

Take away the alcohol part and you'd have a scene from the movie, "The Long Ships," starring Richard Widmark (an old Viking movie). They had a device called the mare of steel ... a long curved blade. But, by the time someone got to the end of the blade, whether alcohol was waiting at the end probably wouldn't matter much (grin).

From what I understand, famed Scottish poet, Robert Burns, died of complications that, today, would be called "acute gastritis" - the symptoms of which include an inability to fart (grin). That must have been a very painful death. In any event, I heard (not sure if true) that his tombstone bears the last short poem he ever wrote:
