I have always use a HD in a removeable cartridge as Channel 0, drive 0 on my IDE controller. So I can swapped OS between Xp, 2K, 98, dos...
I put the second HD as drive 1 on the same channel. After a Boot HD failure, I removed the cartridge. I decide to put XP on the HD on drive 1, do I can at least get some work done.
I subsequently put the HD on channel 0, drive 0, back into the PC, and repaired the XP. But now the PC still boot from the channel 1, drive 1.
Is this normal ?

I think that's a setting in the BIOS. Boot order?

Mat is right on, you just need to change the order of your drives in the bios. You may also be able to press F8 while booting and select which drive as well. Some Bios's have this option. F8 maybe the key, or another. Read the bottom of your screen while the bios is posting.

hmm, BIOS was the first place I looked, and the option is only device type like HD, or Cd, or Zip. ... the usual stuff. It is a phoenix BIOS, and I need to take another look.

That tells the bios what devices to try and boot from.
You need to find the area that lets you set which drive is the boot drive itself. Look for a menu selection like Boot Options. It allows you to select the individual drive to boot from.
Also when the bios is booting look on the bottom of the screen for boot options. I can select drives on the fly without going in to the bios. This works great for separate Boot drives. -
it depends on your bios options, every bios has the boot order but not every bios has to go to which HD. if it doesn't it searches. you can also set a HD and boot ini and make it go to that location and put your drawer there but it can get complicated. F8 is also an option but a hasstle.
