Well that's it, when I select Quicktime in the osex (0.0110a1) output, it quits. I've tried this with DVDs in the drive, disc images and VIDEO_TS folders in the HD. I have a G4 running Tiger. Any clues welcome,

I'm not sure QuickTime output was ever fully implemented in osex. Most people these days use Mac The Ripper or Yade X to rip a DVD they own. Then MPEG Streamclip (with the Apple MPEG2 QuickTime Playback Component installed) to open the VOBs, set in and out points, and convert selected portions to QuickTime formats like DV, MJPEG, etc. Cinematize is also a popular commercial app for doing this, but after ripping I'd give Streamclip a try first and see if it does all you need.

P.S. I forgot you have Toast. Once you've ripped the full DVD, which should create a VIDEO_TS folder on your hard drive, you can probably do what Frobozz says here:

"Another option if you have Toast 6 is to drag the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD to the Toast video window, select the movie and click Export. This saves it as a DV file. The MPEG Streamclip method is definitely preferable if you want to select just a portion of the video to export to DV."

Though I'd never used MPEG Streamclip, I found it an excellent application and the interface is great. What is good about Toast (in exporting to mpeg,QT, AVI, etc.) is that you can determine the size of the output file - typical if you want it to fit into a cd.
What keeps on being a PITA is the length of the process...I mounted a disc image, dropped the vob into Toast (24 minute film), chose export to AVI, 690mb, and after about 5 hours the progress bar had moved less than a 10th of its length...unbelievable ! Or is it again my unhealthy deviation to all things quick 'n dirty ? I'm beginning to think there's a Quadra hiding inside my G4...
