    how do i convert an avi file to mpeg so I can 'pull' it in adobe encore
    for authoring - similarly how do i convert an mp3 file to wav file

    What kind of AVI? I'm guessing a Xvid or similar. You need to use an MPEG-2 encoder like TMPGEnc encoder or similar to encode to MPEG-2. You can convert to a WAV file from a MP3 by several methods. I use VirtualDub and save the audio out to WAV format.
