  1. The file below are the options that my capture program let me. What is the difference? Is the next step should be encoding to MPEG 2 and then authoring a DVD?

    DVD-Pal

    PAL (25 fps)
    Field order A
    MPEG files
    24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
    (MPEG-1)
    Video data rate: 2000 kbps
    Audio data rate: 128 kbps
Layer 2, 44 kHz, Joint stereo

    AVI DV- Pal

    PAL (25 fps)
    Frame-based
    Microsoft AVI files
    24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- PAL, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

The top one is MPEG-1, which could be used for a DVD without encoding, as it is already DVD compliant resolution, but would be low quality at that bitrate. The audio would also have to be converted to use on a DVD, it needs to be 48K. This appears to be a odd format.

It would be much more practical at 1/2 D1 resolution of 352 X 576, 48k audio, as the low bitrate would work better. Or you could use MPEG-1 VCD format that would be at a fixed bitrate of 1150kbps, 44K audio, 352 X 288 resolution. VCD would work for a DVD, but the audio would have to be converted to 48K.

The bottom is AVI-DV video, which is higher quality, but would have to be encoded. DV video is much easier to edit than the MPEG-1. It can also be encoded to MPEG-2, a higher quality version of MPEG for a DVD. Type 2 DV is usually more compatible with encoders like TMPGEnc.

What capture program (or capture device) are you referring to?

  3. somehow I cannot use the top one, hoever I have found a different type of file:
    PAL DV Avi

    PAL (25 fps)
    Field order A
    Microsoft AVI files
    24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- PAL, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo
The only diffirence is that this one is file order A and the other one is frame based. What is the difference?
I plan to encode to MPEG-2 and then to author a DVD.

    Thanks
