I'm on a fairly new install of my OS. I have a few avi's on this drive. They all work fine when playing them, but none of them will open in virtualdubmod, divfix, or divx repair. (I was trying to check them there because they wouldnt open in VDMod)
The VDMod error is: "[!] Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown).
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to
decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media
Player, are not suitable. Only 'Direct stream copy' is available for this
video."
The divx repair error is: "Bad Frame Report from DivxRepair"
I have ffdshow installed and vfw/decoder/xvid set to libavcodec. That didnt work. I then installed the ace mega codec pack (i know i know) with its default settings. Still wont work.
The avi's open fine in those programs on my old drive/old os install.
Any idea's? Need more info? My system info is in my profile.

Have you had a look at your Direct Show filters in CodecSniper? I had a similar problem some time ago, unfortunately all codecs were reported okay. Tried rendering in GSpot (That might give you a clue if CodecSniper doesn't). Sorry, I don't remember clearly how I solved the problem. Many people swear by ffdshow, I always had problems with it, maybe re-install and reconfigure? And get rid of the mega-pack.
:P
Anyway, good luck.Pull! Bang! Darn! -
Change the fourcc from XVID to DIVX and you should be fine.

Thanks for the reply's guys.
I tried the suggestion from mat first. VFW config>encoder side>swapped fourcc to divx>Rebooted
Didnt help.
I now have codec-sniper open (I've never used this) and everything is ok except for one, which is:
174. Direct Show | MPEG-2 Sections and Tables | %systemroot%\system32\mpeg2data.ax
Says its broken. Is this ok to delete? If so, then what? -
go to start menu -> run and run this (without the quotes) "dvdupgrd.exe /detect" and report what it says

dont delete mpeg2data.ax , but nero is what is doing your dvd decoding (so says windows)
as for your issue with xvid -- in gspot , have you tried to play xvid in gspot and see what it reports ? if it can render xvid and show no errors , you might want to look at your install of vdub and/or where the xvid codec is installed -- i.e. in system directory and you dont have read permissions or not logged in as admin ..."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Sometime's the simplest thing's work .
Use nic's fourcc changer .
Load avi , change both box's to xvid , and save ... should be able to open them now . -
Suggested that to start with, but that obviously didn't help, according to OP...

Both settings are on xvid in the fourcc changer.
I've opened an avi in gspot. The screen is here.
The avi's play fine in each player. They just wont open in vdub or avi fix progs. I still get the errors listed above ^^
I've never had this problem. I've also never used xp sp2 till now. ...Could it have anything to do with that? :/ I have all the windows updates installed as well. -
Does the Ace Mega codec pack install an XVid codec? I'd assume it does, but conflicts might have caused it not to work correctly. I'd normally tend to suggest grabbing the latest version of XVid from the Tools section to the left and install it, but at this point, I don't know how it would interact with the codec pack.
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
And no luck if you changed the fourcc of the avi to DIVX?
VBR MP3 is always a PITA, but VDub should at least try to open it.

good point ...
it is just another of those systems ruined by a codec pack or something .... we get certainly many reports of this ...
not so easy to fix other by a complete re-install in some cases ..."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650)
