I don't use AutoGK but usually when encoding most of the work is done by the compression codec. So if the codec you're using supports multithreading you will get some speedup. Divx is well multithreaded and nearly doubles in speed on a 2-core Athlon 64. Older versions of Xvid are not multhithreaded and don't run any faster with two cores. The latest beta builds of Xvid are multithreaded but get less of an increase than Divx.Originally Posted by strongbad

My processor is a 2.8 Northwood with 800 FSB.
Using FairUse Wizard with only one thread enabled the encoding occured at 24 fps and the CPU temperature was stable at 62 C.
Enabling hyperthreading caused the encoding to increase to 34 fps but the CPU temperature gradually increased to 70 C.
Going back to one thread caused the encoding rate to once again fall to 24 fps and the temperature to reduce back to 64 C.
My system has never had problems with overheating before despite using DVD Rebuilder and CCE extensively.
Hyperthreading has both risks and benefits that users need to be aware of. -

Might be a little slower than the Prescott but when running it 9 hours at a time encoding cool running is a good thing.
The Dual core 3.2 P4 non HT I was testing was hitting 90C when shrinking. Did I worry? sort of, Talk about a heater. The air coming out of the power supply & case fans on the back and top of the case was warm. Worry, well looking into things I found that they run hotter and will throtle back if need be. But one hot chip,
