I have AVI clips taken with my Digital Camera which I am converting to MPEG2 in TMPGEnc for transfer onto DVD.

The problem is that when there is any rapid movement (mainly noticeable on panning) the edges of everything has a very noticeable distortion. The distortion is hard to explain, but looks like the edges have been 'combed' (ie. it looks like each alternating line is out of alignment.

I have tried changing various settings in TMPGEnc but have been unable to get rid of the distortion. Due to the appearance of the distortion I thought it might have something to do the interlacing setting, but changing it to non-interlaced didn;t have any effect either.

Sounds like you have DV AVI as a source. You need to set TMPGEnc up for BOTTOM FIELD FIRST although if you were using the WIZARD MODE it should have set that correctly but I have heard that the WIZARD MODE will screw that up from time to time.

Yes the source is DV AVI, and TMPGEnc is set up for Bottom Field First (although I have tried changing it with no noticeable effect.

If I burn it to DVD, it does seem to be OK on TV, however I also want to edit the clips (in Premiere) and am worried that once I edit and render the clip the quality will downgrade even further and become unwatchable.

I guess the best idea is to give it a go and see what the result is.

    Thanks for your help.

DV AVI from a digital camcorder will always be true interlaced video.

Interlaced video will give you that "combed" effect on a computer monitor ... this is a normal thing. It does this because that is just how interlaced video looks on a progressive computer monitor.

It will look normal on a TV once you burn it to a DVD and play it back on a TV so don't worry about it.
