  1. I made a dvd for my aunt from a vacation video she took. The problem was, the camcorder i recorded off of only outputed mono sound, and i didnt use the apporpriate adapter to send the sound to both channels.

So the dvd is made and only puts sound out to the left side. Its probably not a huge deal, but i want to know how to re-master the dvd to enable both channels to output the sound. not really stereo i guess, but some seperation wouldnt hurt either.

i have searched and searched, and just find a thousand different answers. i have tried a few (tmpeg, supermp3converter, more crap) and im not tired of it, it cant be that hard can it?

another option i would have is to change it on the .wmv file i have of the dvd before i made it into vob files. i could remake the vobs after i fix the wmv, but what program could i edit the sound in wmv videos?

edit, sorry, wrong forum. could a mod please move to general newbie? thank you

    Hi Krupted,

I had a very similar thing happen to one of my sister's homemade DVD's (yeah, she got a deal on a bundle, but never really took an interest in video until she had a problem with her vacation footage!).

But, I digress.... I recall ripping her DVD to an AVI, then I ran the AVI through VirtualDub to force the audio to be Stereo, then saved the audio stream as a resultant WAV file. Then I just used TmpGenc DVD Author to add the DVD's video and used the extracted wav file and re-authored to disc. Voila, problem solved.

    Hope you get this fixed!

    Cheers!

Use DVD Decrypter in IFO mode to rip the video and the audio. You will have to go into the STREAM PROCESSING mode and make sure you set FILE SPLITTING to NONE in the IFO OPTIONS. If done correctly you will end up with two files ... a video file (filenmae.m2v) and an audio file (filename.ac3 or filename.mpa or filename.wav depending on the format used on the original).

You then just have to change the audio file from MONO to STEREO. How you do this depends on what format the audio is so let us know after you do the ripping.

Once you get the audio into STEREO mode (actually it will be mono but will come out of both speakers) you then have to do the DVD Authoring over again.

This method does not involve redoing the video at all which is a major plus.

I origonally recorded this to the pc in windows media video. I know its not ideal for compatibility, yet i found the picture quality to be great.

Something is wrong though, i set decrypter to ifo mode and enable streaming, yet it still output vob files like a normal dvd. what am i missing? its like setting to streaming mode simply doesnt do anything.... if i set it to demux under the streaming window, then i get an .ac3 file. i guess this would be my sound? i remember before looking for a program to change .ac3 mono to stereo but i never found one

Here is a mini-guide or a work-flow of what to do.

1.) If the ripped audio is a PCM WAV audio file skip to step 3.
2.) If MP2/MPA or AC-3 I would convert to PCM WAV. I would probably use GoldWave.
3.) Load the PCM WAV into GoldWave and make sure it is 16-bit 48k format.
4.) Convert to "Stereo" by copying the one channel to another channel. You will have "Stereo" sound in that there will be a Right and Left channel but the audio is the same on both so it is really Mono but you get audio from both speakers. Make sure to save this as a 16-bit 48k Stereo PCM WAV audio file.
5.) If the original audio was PCM WAV then you are done if not go to step 6.
6.) Convert the 16-bit 48k Stereo PCM WAV audio file to AC-3 format using ffmpeggui.

Please note that GOLDWAVE is not FREEWARE but it is TRIALWARE meaning you get to use it "X" number of times until it will LOCK UP until you REGISTER IT (aka BUY IT). You can actually use it many many many times before it locks up on you.

Anyways once you have your new audio file you can go ahead and re-author using the ripped video file and the new audio file.

  9. Well after all of this frustration of things not working like they seem, i find that i can simply insert the origonal masterd wmv video i have right into goldwave. i have the sound processed now, both channels work fine and i even normallized it. Only thing was goldwave only then save this to a wma file.

So i now have the origonal wmv video with the one side sound, and a new wma audio stream that i want to replace the old with. i have been trying to figure this out in windows media encoder 9, but my luck is nothing right now.

at least im very close now...

  10. Finished! Fulcilives, thank you for the help. i was able to figure out how windows media encoder works (damn tree branches, had to have those right for it to work). All is good, both channels, and now a nice new dvd.

    thanks again everyone.
