Hi, I used VirtualDubMpeg2's deinterlace filter to deinterlace a .avi file. However after finished converting, the sound is not listenable no word is understood and the file size increases about 4 times bigger. Does anyone know why?
I just want to deinterlace the .avi file so that I can get rid of the jagged edges and I have been pointed to use VirtualDubMpeg2. The only place in VirtualDubMpeg2 that I can find is to use the Deinterlace filter? Is this correct? But the results as stated.
Can anyone suggest or tell me how I can deinterlace a .avi file?
Your help is much appreciated.

What sort of AVI is it ?
Are you sure it is interlaced ?
When you save the file, you need to make sure audio is set to Direct Stream Copy to preserve the original audio, and you have to set up your encoding for the video. The default output for filtered video is uncompressed, which requires a lot of space.Read my blog here.

I normally use VD Mod, but the deinterlace is similar. Are you deinterlacing DV to convert to Xvid or similar? That's one of the few instances that I would deinterlace. If you are converting to MPEG, you wouldn't deinterlace. Interlaced video will look jagged on a computer monitor unless viewed with a program that can handle interlaced material, like Power DVD or VLC. (With adjustments) TVs normally use interlaced video. If I really have to deinterlace, I like the Smart Deinterlacer. You can get it at http://neuron2.net/
But for the other problems: I don't know why the audio would change. It generally just passes through unless you re-encode it.For the video, you have to chose a output codec or it will convert it to a huge raw AVI file.

The .avi fie is the raw video files which I captured from my Sony DV and download it to my hard drive. I make family videos by taking video using DV then download video clips to my hard drive as a .avi then edit it and save it as avi output file and finally use MySonic to burn it to DVD. However, I see jagged video on the tv after making the DVD and I have been told to deinterlace the video if I want to get rid of the jagged video. That's what I am trying to do. I have not used VirtualDubMpeg2 before. I will need to have a look at setting and try to get it to work.
I downloaded the Smart Interlace filter. I started up VD, opened a video file .avi, added the Smart Interlace filter, then I selected File..Save As AVI. The input file is 241mb and the output file is 1.9gig in size? I would have thought they would be about the same size since they both are .avi.
Again can not hear the sound properly, it sounded like there have been a lot of dropped frame???
Can you tell me the setting and the setting and steps in VD to deinterlace properly?
Thanks. -
You should not be seeing interlacing on your TV as it is designed to play back interlaced video.
What do you use to edit normally ?
When you output, make sure you save it as DV-avi, otherwise it willbe saved as uncompressed avi, hence the large difference in file size.Read my blog here.

I have just started to use Premiere Pro to edit my Video. I was using Pinnacle Studio 9 previously.
I think it may save the video as uncompress avi, that's why the output file is too big.
Where do you change the option to save it as DV-avi as I can not find that option. In the Save as type, it only has one type which is "Audio-Video Interlace (*.avi)"
Does Premiere pro have Deinterlace filter?
Thanks -
If you video mode is set to Full Processing (which it will be if you have applied filters), then you can set the compression in the save as dialogue (or the video settings, depends on the version of virtualdub you are using). If you have the Panasonic DV codec installed, you can save as DV

I found where the setting is, it was uncompress, that's why the file size is too big. It is in the Video Compression setting. It does not have the Panasonic DV Codec. Do you know where I can get the codec? Is this codec better than the normal codec, such as Cinepak Codec by Radius or Intel Indeo Video?
Thanks -
The name ' Panasonic DV Codec ' is also a link to the tool page where you can download it. Just click on the words. If you want to save out your file in DV format using VirtualDub, you will need a DV codec. It will show up under 'Compression' after it's installed. You select that for your compression. The advantage of the DV codec is it creates the same video format as your DV camera and the new filtered file should be close to the original size.
I use VirtualDub Mod, instead of VDMPEG2 for DV, but they both work in similar ways.
