I just unhooked my router from my computer and I now have my modem hooked directly into my PC, but I can't get online now? Any ideas why that would be, or how to fix this?

  2. If this is a cable modem, unplug the power cord, wait 3-5 minutes, then plug it back in.

If DSL, make sure the PC is set to obtain IP address automatically, and/or check the addressing scheme. Router will most likely be on a different subnet than the modem.

modems store MAC address of the device they are connected to and will not issue a new IP to the new device unless their memory is flushed. Power down as said above (5 secs is enough). If no connection call tech support. Your IP may be missing/delayed. No need to get more in depth here as this goes beyond the scope of this forum.

How is modem configured? It sounds like modem is in bridge mode, and it'll need to be reconfigured if that's the case. Call support for either ISP or modem for instructions if you don't already have instructions.

All set fixed it, just needed to unplug modem and restart comp.

  6. You could have also done it by launching a command prompt and entering ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew.

    No. (see above why ...)

  8. Ditto. Release /Renew will most definitely NOT work, for the reasons stated. At least on a cable modem.

    DSL, it depends.

Release/renew does work on a Windows 98 system with wireless adapter I have, but I don't know about other OSs or hardware.
