Warning - A newbie replying... use at your own risk!
I have a Pioneer receiver, VSX-D458, and a Panasonic DVD player, RV41. The RV41 has all of the extra RCA outputs that my receiver requires. This gives me 5.1 surround sound, however I can't seem to get DTS and I've tried every setting. The DVD player has a built in Dolby Digital decoder but not the DTS (Digital Surround) decoder. So it looks like "DTS ready" means only if I have a decoder, either a separate decoder or one built into the DVD player.
I'm not sure about the Pioneer DVD 444 whether it has the necessary decoders built in, but that's what you need to look for.
Hope this helps. And if I'm way off base, please let me know! I would love to get the DTS sound too!
