    Is one better than the other for burning test discs to see if they play properly?

    See if they both play on your stand alone DVD player. It really shouldn't make a difference. If both play on it, then use whichever one you have available at the moment.

    Personally, I haven't had problems with either one.

    Do the +RW allow you to change the booktype like the +R do? I'm not sure where the manual for my standalone is but I think the only recordable mentioned was -R. I've made a few tests on -R and they play without problem, I haven't tried anything else as of yet.

    DVD-RW works less of the time than DVD+RW (opposite of how DVD-R works more than DVD+R), depends on your player.
