It maybe an avi type 1/2 problem, there is a converter on the ulead site. Otherwise try running the video through virtualdub using the pinnacle dv codec as the output compressor. BTW make sure you have the 9.4.3 update

Look under Video / Compression, the pinnacle codec should show on the list

Erratum! Download/Install the Panasonic DV codec and use that, Studio should then like the file

Probably what JohnP is suggesting you should be enough to solve your problem but, generally speaking, the .avi format is just the container of the video and audio streams which are building, when muxed, the final avi file.If you want to know the exact codecs for both video and audio forming your avi you have to use a software for instance like GSPOT (freeware)
    http://www.headbands.com/gspot/gspot221.exe
After that you'll be able to search for the appropriate decoder to handle your file.

I did as u told me to (downloaded the codec, installed it ).
i opened the pinncle studio 9 program and tried to open the desired avi file but it's still gives me the same error:
"the video file couldn't be opened"

  10. another way:

download DVdate. Open your avi file in it. Look what information is displayed about the avi file. If it's DV type 1, then use the command "convert to Dv type 2" and you will get a file that opens in Studio without any loss of quality. If it's anything else, you may also convert it to DV type 2 but with a recompression, that means a loss of quality.

  11. I believe Studio 9 uses PicVideo for its DV. So you should has PicVideo codec
on your computer if Studio 9 is installed.

    1. Open video file in virtuialdup.
    2. "file -> file information" to check your AVI file size, frame, and audio format.
(make sure it is 29.96 fps, and 720x480).
    3. "vedio -> compression -> PicVideo" to selection compression format.
    4. "file -> save AVI" to save the output file.

Stadio 9 should be able to open the output file.

Just a quick thought - if its not a type 1/2 avi issue - there is usually an error message displayed on the bar at the top of the timeline. Is there one there when you add the file? - if so what is it?

Why not just do the rest of the work with the ulead software. It is far better than the Pinnicle software.
