Huge difference, in many cases. Mostly for tv shows, not so much on short 2-hour movies.

You won't make it better than the original. You only need an application like DVD Rebuilder Pro if you are backing up to a disc that is smaller than the size of the film. Then you need to re-encode or compress it to make it smaller. There are many tools to do this, using different techniques. And not all tools and techniques are equal in quality.

The aim isn't to improve on the original, but to preserve as close to the original quality as possible when reducing the size of the film for backup.

The best quality is obtained by backing up the original to a DL disc (assuming the original is DL) so no re-encoding is required.

    What guns1inger said.

When you go from 7-8GB down to 4.37GB, you will ALWAYS lose quality. The aim is to minimise the quality loss as much as possible.

When I first started using DVDRebuilder with CCE I did an experiment with LOTR. Backed up one with DVDRebuilder/CCE and the other one with DVDShrink. There was very noticible difference! The one with DVDShrink you could see pixilazation around areas of darknes and movement, and it was a bit washed out looking.
The disk created with DVDRebuilder/CCE was much better looking. no pixilization. The only difference I could see from the original was the colors not being as vibrant. But still look really good.

These were tested on my brothers 50" Sony Rear Projection LCD TV. In a DVD Player with HD up convertion.
