I've seen a bunch of firmware upgrades, some official by Phillips, some not, but my question is what exactly do the firmware upgrades do? I just burned an avi onto a cd and the colors are all off when I play it on my dvd player, and it plays fine on my pc. Can one of the updates fix that? What I'd really like is a listing of each of the firmware updates, and what they do. Is there an english site for that? I vaguely remember going to a portugese site, but I couldn't make out what it said.
Thanks.

Please don't take this the wrong way, as it is not intended thus, but you may find that the members here are very willing t help those who attempt to help themsleves first.
In reading your post, I get the feeling that you are asking the memmbers of this forum/site to do your research for you - I may be wrong, I admit it. But it'd be much better if you made that attempt first and then asked us for help on specfic issues you may be having.
Please let me know if you have ay questions.
Cheers!

Did you try pressing the system(menu) button on the remote twice when the movie begins to play?
-
First off, the newest firmware is 1223 so do NOT flash to 1109 unless you want subtitle issues.
Second, Philips no longer offers the 642/37 firmware on the site and they do not know when they will offer ( 1223 ) firmware.
To get info on this player from a wide range of users, I would suggest going to a group dedicated to the player.... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/philips_dvp642/ -
No update should be required. If you follow the above directions to push the system button twice the color issue is corrected. This is common amongst movies encoded for download from the net. For some odd reason the colors get skewed and you have tracer colors of red, green, blue, and yellow. In most cases with the DVP642 if you press the system button twice this issue goes away and the movie will play normally.

Awesome. Thanks. I just wanted to make sure my dvd player played all that it could.
And no, I didn't try the system button twice thing. I'll have to try that. thanks again. -
If you get a ? next to your subs, rename your SRT file with a
;1
e.g.
subs.srt;1 -
u actually pose a good question. i got this dvd plyr a couple months ago and it had the 1223e firmware. i had to downgrade to 0531 i think it was so i could bypass macrovision to vcr. the region code always did work. in doing that, now my color doesnt work on svideo it seems. i have to have the yellow cord (of the yellow, red, white cord) to get color on whatever im trying to watch.

Did you select the right output in the system menu? Lots of these dvd players require you to do so.

actually my svideo cable wires(prong) were damaged inside. i guess i was too rough when trying to insert it. its kinda hard to get back there to it. the color now works fine w/ svideo!!
