Hi there, so I got a cheaper (99 bucks/ cyberhome) stand alone burner for transfering vhs & tv shows. I always try to put the right on the computer to reauthor them with chapter, menues ext. ( I alwas usr RW discs since I'm gonna reauthor them anyway
The problem is 6 out of 10 times I do it and my computer won't read them,( Or it with play them but won't extrack them. Or in one cas, played fine, extracted fine, but tryed to load into TMPGnc & it said: could not open decoder)). When this hapens I've retransfered & it worked fine but man that's a lot of wasted time. So I guess my question is: is the a type of blank that may work better than others, or some software that's better at reading/ extracting discs ? (I use dvd decrypter)
Or do i just have a crappy recorder? Thanks,Mike

I suspect the answer to your last question explains most of your problems. And the answer is - yes.

That said, always finalise the disc, and use good quality media that is compatible with both devices. Look up the player and writer in the appropriate sections (menu to your left) and look at the ratings people have give various media for those players.

What kind of RW -- minue or plus RW The +RW shouldn't need to finalize (there might not even be an option to finalize them in the recorder).

Try to do one recording at a time. I've done this and it works better. So instead of recording 3 different 30-minute videos, I record one of them, then import that to my computer. Then I erase and record another 30-minute section, then import to computer. I have been using +RW and Ulead's Import from DVD Function as found in (VideoStudio 9 and MovieFactory 4/5).

    Regards,
    George

  5. If you can play the DVD back on that recorder, and your DVD player, then the disc is fine. I assume you did use DVD+R/W for this recorder.

The different is Cyberhome does not authored a movie type DVD. So those programs is designed to deal with DVD movie will not work properly.

The fact is that the video is not encrypted at all. To work with video , just copy the Video_TS folder with all its VOB files to your Harddisk, and work them with TMPGenc DVDauthor, or convert the VOB files into mpeg files if that's how you work.

I have used the same recorder and transfer most of my VHS, 8mm to DVD+R/W, then xfer to PC, combine/edit with TMPGenc DVDauthor, then burn the result on DVD-R. It is much faster and easier than using those two video capture cards I have.

Hey SingSing, I'l have to try that(coping the video_ts folder onto my HD instead of extracting it. But it seems to me that I've tried that before & still got error mesages. I'm not sure, I'll check it out but in the meantime I'm still thinking I should be saving my money for a better burner. The thing wasn't a complete wast of money though. It plays PAL discs!!Thanks

I don't know about the Cyberhome but the Liteons can use Vob2mpg and transfer the DVD+RW contents to the hard drive just fine...

You should not have error at all, the unencrypted VOB files on the disc are just any files on a disc. Just copy them, don't use any applications.

Yeah I had contacted Cyberhome about this & they suggested I update the firmware on it. But after reading some reveiws I'm afraid to. I've been told that updating the firmware makes the Cyberhome not region-free anymore. that would suck!. Anyway after work I'm gonn try another transfer & see how it works. Maybe the dvd+rw would work better in my PC if I DIDN'T finalize it.
    Or does it matter? Thanks

  10. 1. If you have a PC, you can always make a region-free backup copy.

    2. Unencrypted VOB files are just files !

    3. Cyberhome DVD recorder uses DVD+R, and DVD+R/W. You should not use DVD-R/W or DVD-R.

Also, extracting/copying with ISOBuster (instead of Windows filesystem) may help you with disc readability.

Well now I'm even more stumped. I transfered a dvd. Transfered it both ways- dvd decrypter & copy & paste. It plays fine but when I load it into TMPGnc there is NOTHING THERE!!- No Audio, no video. I also tried extracting the disc with iso buster- same results. The pisser is, I could probably try transfering again & it would work fine! But I don't want to have to transfer twice all the time!
Again, the disc plays fine in my player & computer. So what now?

  13. All those applications you used want to work with Commercial DVD-Video, but the IFO file that defined what the VOB files are, is telling the softwares they are not commerical DVD. That's correct, because they are recorded DVD video.

Just copy the VOB files to the harddisk. Compile/Edit/Burn with TMPGenc DVDauthor.

If you really want to work with them like Commercial DVD, Just copy the VOB files to a folder, then use IFOedit to create the IFO file. Followed by those tools you mentioned.

Hey SingSing, I see what you are saying but I've tried that too. Actally in all cases it's the LAST VOB. file that has problems & it's incoplete or something. If I try to play the file it ends before it should. Maybe it's just not finalizing it right. And IFOedit siezed up at 94%. Oh and a few of the discs siezed up the whole computer. So I don't think it's a format thing. Something is really wrong!
I don't know, but I give up. The things just a piece a crap . I'm in the market for a new one I guess,Mike

  15. 1.Rip with DVDDecrypter and use the Close Disc function.
    2.Use FixVTS->Drag the VIDEO_TS.IFO file->Full DVD.

Yep, I tried those discs too. Like I said It works fine sometimes but too often I spend all that time transfering only to have a usless disc. I may have just gotten a lemon & the warrenty has expired. Anyway I just got a Panasonic DMR-ES10 on ebay, brand new (78 bucks +20 dollar shipping). Hopefully it works ok for me . Only thing is I can't figure if the panasonic plays PAL. I may have to hang onto the Cyberhome just for that. Anyone know if the panasonic will play PAL?
    Thanks for your help everybody!Mike
