A few years ago I installed AVIC (fourCC Changer) and was able to change .avi files that were XviD to DivX. A few weeks ago I had a fairly major computer meltdown, but I was able to get it fixed and had to reinstall quite a few things. My problem now is that the AVIC program no longer displays an option to turn an XviD to DivX. What it does give me is the option to convert the file into either MP41, MP42, MP43 or DIV3. Am I missing something here? I have opened a few .avi files that are XviD encoded and when I do, I can convert it to "XviD", but that's pointless. Any suggestions?

Do you hav DivX installed on your system ??

Type it manually. Why would you want to change the fourCC anyway? If you really want to, it is probably easier to set it in the XviD config before you encode or use DivX for encoding.

Only ever heard of a couple of Sony players that don't support XviD's fourCC and on some of them XVID support was added via a firmware update.
Shouldn't be possible to ruin a file that way. As pointed out all it is doing is changing a couple of bytes in the header. If it didn't play then I guess you typed it in wrong. Wrong fourCC means that no decoder will recognise it and fourCC's are case sensitive. -
