  1. I thought this player was region free out of the box but guess what it's not.

  2. It used to be, but later they changed it so you have to make it region free. To do so,:

    1. Press Setup on remote control to access the setup page
    2. Enter 9210 on the remote
    3. A secret menu will pop up
    4. Select 0 to 6 in region code (0 is region free)
    5. Press Setup on remote again to exit

    It is also the 971, NOT the 917, but everyone knows what you are talking about.

    Also, there is a huge thread over at avsforums concerning this player, with all of the recommended settings and such.
