I think there is a problem with the optimize function on my dvd recorder. I get the prompt to opimize the HD so I go and optimize I get a message it will take 8 hours so I optimize, get a scroll bar and 333mins when complete right after that I get the wait message and I wait but the optimize is cancelled and the recorder suggest to have my HD optimized. What gives, anyone come across this problem. Thanks for your help. -garman

try deleteing your programs on the HDD and do it. I've heard of people doing this who had lots of stuff on the HDD and took a while. Mine took 20 seconds with nothing on the HDD.

Thanks, I was thinking about the programs I had set up may be the problem. I'll post later with the results. - cheers, garman.

I've had this problem since I got my recorder whenever I went into the menus and tried to optimize...
Select "optimize" it asks you to confirm as no timer recordings will happen while optimizing... It starts, give "time remaning" then unit "resets" itself... Optimization did NOT complete.
I called Pioneer.. at first they told me it meant it didn't need optimizing... then I said I had programs on the drive, edited, deleted stuff, etc.. and try to optimize with same results...
They wanted me to send in for service... I never did... Was/am using for recording programs.. Plus they didn't sound confident that they knew what it was... I may try them again... as the warranty ends in a few months...

This may not be of much comfort, but the optimize feature didn't exist on the previous Pioneer DVD recorders. As a result I've never optimized my Pioneer DVR-510H in the three years I've had it and it has worked perfectly.

This optimize option is a SHAM. I was able to remove all the data from the drive and ran the optimized. It locked again and I promply received the WAIT display. So I recorded one file to the drive and tried the optimize, still does not work. Their support staff suggested I reset the unit, I did still did not fix the optimize problem. They suggested I bring the unit in. No thanks. How do I do my recordings if the unit is gone. I think By just deleting enough files the message to optimize goes away. That's what happened to me. I know it's not a solution. Cheers, -garman
