Bought an HP dvd740e last tuesday. Installed the firmware revision 42JH, everything seemed to work fine until updated Lightscribe drivers from v.1.4.13.1 to v.1.4.67.1. Now Windows keep messaging that an unknown device has malfunctioned and it need to close it. Guess which is the device which has become unrecognizable by Windows??!!! I've tried a System Recovery to the point before the new driver was installed, but Windows can't restore. How can I uninstall this new driver in order to discard or assert that this is the cause. Also installed Nero v6 on a PC which already had Roxio 7.5. But to the best of my knowledge, the problem began after the lightscribe driver update. However, if I disconnect the power from the driver and reconnect it again, Windows recognizes it until the next shutdown. Uninstalled Nero and Surething Labeler (Lightscribe host's software) without positive results.

You know, I've seen this more and more . . .

OK, first, uninstalling the driver is easy - you can do that in Device Manager, and even rollback to the previous driver.

What I can tell you is this: Roxio and Nero have a love/hate relationship going on. They BOTH want ultimate control of system burners.

I suggest you pick one and stick with it.

    Post back with your results.

    Cheers!

Thanks Tao. I'd already uninstalled Nero and the lightscribe host software (Surething CD Labeler SE). So far the problem remains. I've also tried to uninstall the device driver via Device Manager, but the manager is unable to find any driver for this device, although the device is recognized by Windows each time I disconnect and reconnect it.

Removed Nero again, removed the burner's driver via Device Manager, exchanged the burner for a new one (same model), and guess what? The problem persists. I assume there should be a conflict between this burner and other USB component or driver. Windows finds the device but recognizes it as an "unknown device" instead of an HP740e, unless I disconnect it from the power source and reconnect it. Suggestions , PLEASE!!!

try getting rid of all the old upper and lower filters left in the registry from the installs/removals of software.

Click the Start button, click Run. In the Open box, type Regedit, and then click OK. Click the plus sign

(+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Click the plus sign (+) next to SYSTEM. Click the plus sign (+) next to

CurrentControlSet. Click the plus sign (+) next to Control. Click the plus sign (+) next to Class. Click

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. On the right hand side of the window, click UpperFilters. Click

Edit on the menu bar. Click Delete, and then click OK. On the right-hand side of the window, click

LowerFilters. Click Edit on the menu bar. Click Delete, and then click OK. Click File, and then click

    Exit. Restart the computer normally.

To go along with aedipuss, look in Device Manager and see if the the drive is listed. Go to the properties of the drive (if it is listed), and if it says "The Device Can Not Start (Code XX)", where XX I think is usually 10, 39, or 40, do exactly as aedipuss said. It sounds like you have a USB drive, so you have tried using a differnet USB port?
This may help you, it sounds similar:

Thanks to all of you. thevoelk, weird but the Device Manager shows that the device is working properly. The problem is that it is recognized as "unknown device" and not HP740e (neither appears on the toolbar on the USB icon). Only, when the burner's power cable is removed and reconnected again, Windows does recognize it until the PC is shut.

And, yes, I've tried it on other USB Ports. Ah!! not to forget telling you, guys, that I returned the burner to the retailer in exchange for a new one (same model) in order to discard the problem as hardware related, and the problem persists.

Nevertheless, I''ll try the procedure explained by aedipuss. Will this procedure just erase not needed entries?

ROF, what is the Molex power?? I'm disconnecting the power supply from the back of the burner while both it and the PC are on. That is the only way I've managed in order to obligue Windows to correctly recognize the burner.

Tried aedipuss recommendation and the problem still happens. In fact after erasing the registry entries, AnyDVD v5531 had trouble finding the my other DVD burner. I restored the backed up erased registries and fortunately this new problem disappeared. Another weird thing I've noticed is that the problem is intermittent. Sometimes Windows recognizes the device as an HP dvd740e after booting up as always should be. Any more suggestions will be appreciated.

Let's get the facts straight here, a minute.

1 - Is this an external drive in an enclosure?

2 - I assume it's an external USB type, so can I ask if you've tried it on another USB port?

3 - What happens if you put the burner into your PC as an internal IDE drive? Have you tried it?

Please let us know more info so we can proceed further.

    Thanks!

Tao, thanks. The answers to your questions follow:

    1. Yes, its a brand new external drive. External from its origin.

    2. Yes, I've tried other ports. And, as I stated before, the problem is intermittent, it works sometimes after boot up, sometimes not, using the same port.

    3. Don't quite understand your third question? Did you mean physically installing it inside the PC or configuring it somewhere as an internal drive? My PC is a laptop, so installing it inside the PC is not an option.

    Hope this help you guys.

Could you hook it up by Firewire or is it just USB?

Unfortunately, it is an USB only device. Thanks.
