I have a avi file that i want to convert to mpg2 but when i finished converting with tmpg plus i cannot hear the audio. I tried extracting the audio to wav but tmpeg plus hangs when it starts converting. I can play the avi fine.

Have you tried VirtualDubMod to extract the audio to wav?

  4. I think you have very old GSpot version. Look for 2.52 beta 1 (or here)
Also look which filters are used at rendering - this can give you a hint which audio codec is used

mats, do you think ac3, being 195 kbps. It sounds to me like VBR.

  8. The tag of ac3 is 0x2000 IIRC. Could be some kind of aac (not sure).

Well i installed the AC3 Filter but that didn't help at all. With Full processing mode it said it gave a error "No audio decompressor be found to decompress the source audio format"

AAC! Pretty rare for an AVI, I dare say! http://www.rarewares.org/aac.html - There's a DirectShow filter for AAC

That is because AVIMuxGUI is about the only muxer that supports it. It can also demux it.

I managed to extract the audio using AVIMuxGui and the audio is now a AAC format. I converted the AAC to wav and then when i play it, it becomes unsynced

If you want it as a pcm wav then I would just decode directly with mplayer. No need to extract and if it plays in sync, it should decode in sync to.
