I had stopped using ffmpegX because unless I was converting an MPG to VCD or DVD, I could never get the sound to sync up, no matter what, with any avi, xvid, or divx file. I was using an older G4 350 then. Now, I have a dual 867, and not only does ffmpegX run like a freaking rocket ship, but it converted an 800 meg avi to a PERFECT DVD in less than 2 hours. The sound is flawless, sync is perfect, and some of the artifacts I used to get with ffmpeg encoder are gone.
The speed I can understand, but why is it perfectly accurate now?

I too am trying to figure out what is at the root of audio/video out-of-sync issues. (See: My Post.)
Personally, I believe it might be both software and hardware related, with one not working well with the other. I came to this conclusion following exhaustive testing and research. I used to get perfectly in-sync AVI's out of ffmpegX on a iMac G4/1GHz until I updated a series software on my system (QuickTime 7.0.4, ffmpegX 0.0.9v, DivX 6, etc.). ffmpegX hasn't been able to output a synced AVI since.
Reading the QuickTime support discussion boards on Apple's website shows that we're not alone in this quandary. Apparently, tons of folks are reporting similar issues with no rhyme or reason to them as of yet. Though some initial reports have shown that the "Audio MIDI Setup" app found in the Applications -> Utilities folder may play some role in it.
I'm still conducting my own testing and will continue to update my post with results. I'll continue to check-up on this post as well.
Glad to hear things are working well for you though.

Wow. I am so glad others are having this issue. This may be a deeper issue that imagined. I have had out of Audio/Video sync in iMovie and iDVD and have heard of issues with Final Cut Pro. This has happened on many versions and different hardware.
Most the time everything works, but sometimes, no matter what, things are out of sync. An example: I captured DV video from a VCR into iMovie. Everything's fine. Export to a DV stream, MPEG, to iDVD, etc, everythings out of whack. I have tried different variations, but it all comes back to Apple's products, not ffmpegX or Toast. Hmmmmm...

It would be great if this problem gets solved. I didn't realise how big a problem it was. i have been trying to convert avi files to the mpg4 files that a PSP will read, with little success (although once it worked... havent managed to replicate the results since!). I bought a PSP mainly to watch video and it is disapointing that the synching problem has stalled my plans. And it does seem to be the same problem with any convertor i try. Hope someone can crack this soon!
