    what is the differnce between a filter and a codec? How I view all the installed filters and uninstall the ones i dont need?

    A codec is an encoder/decoder. It could be a filter, however it is normally codecs are VfW. Filter generally refers to direct show filters which are decoder only and therefor not codecs. Filters also aren't always decoders, you can have splitter/parser filters, resize, denoising, muxers, audio downmixers, etc.

    Check the tools section. Should be some filter management tools there.

    VfW = Video for Windows.
    WDM = Windows Driver Model.

  5. provided you haven't installed any codec packs, you shouldnt run into a lot of issues that need to have codecs removed from your system...i know that there was a program that can do that stuff for ya though, it's called codec sniper, however you gotta be very careful with it and only remove the codecs your positive you dont need......i'd generally say, unless you have a VERY firm grasp of exactly what a codec is, and your positive you dont need it, then DONT get rid of it....
