I cannot seem to be able to get an MPEG1 file that will play properly. I'm trying to encode a Xvid AVI into an MPEG1. Using the ffmpeg, the resulting file causing quicktime to crash, moving the playhead and letting go means instant crash.

Using the mpeg2enc codec quiciktime won't even open the file, unrecognized format.

Surely I must be doing something wrong? I just want a basic .mpeg file.

  2. Which versions of OS/ffmpegX/quicktime are you using?

Latest version of ffmpegX, 10.4.5 w QT 7.

The problem seems to be with the audio If I don't encode audio the ffmpeg encode will play fine, if I do encode audio it will crash and just before it does the audio track is like a clicking noise.

I can't get the mpeg2enc encode to play no matter what though, audio or no audio.

Here's what I'm using for my audio settings

    .MP3
    32kbit, 3200Hz, Mono, CBR

I should say aswell, if I reload the resulting mpeg into ffmpegx again, the audio summary says "mp2, 32000hz, 32kbps"....

despite me choosing the MP3 setting.

Why don't you use the default MP2, 224 kbps, 44.1 kHz? It's default for a good reason (compatibility).

The thing is though, I have hundreds of mpeg files encoded with TMPGenc @ 32000hz, 32kbps, mono CBR that play just fine in quicktime. These files when dragged into ffmpegx also display "mp2, 32000hz, 32kbps" in the source format summary. And I need to use a low quality for audio.
