In the last two desktop comps i'd built,i had 512MBs Ram installed. Yet on the system icon in the control panel it only showed as 504MBs. Now in the present,on my new Dell Laptop it has 256MBs ram but only 248MBs show.
In all 3 cases this was DDR Ram by the way. Only connection i've seen is that in each case it was an absence of only 8MBs.
While i am not at all concerned about a measily 8MBs not being recognized, i am curious as to why it is not. Any ideas?

Do you have a seperate video card, or is the video built in? If video is built in, it allocates system memory for video use, thus, the loss in system memory.

You definitely have built-in video. Intel invented this "shared memory structure" so it doesn't have to add more memory just for the video.

Yes in all 3 i had no videocard, but instead had Intergrated Graphics. I guess that is it.
