I'm looking for a free dvd authoring program that will let me set a picture (or a short video would be great, but not necessary) for my background, have some music playing, and have just text (maybe animated) rather than little snapshots. All the programs I've seen FORCE me to use a small thumbnail from my movie. I don't want this. Is there anything that will work? I tried getting DVD Author, but the GUI version wouldn't work, so I just got a bunch of wierd files.

There is only one free authoring program for windows AFAIK - DVD Author. There are a couple of GUIs for it, as it is XML driven.
Honestly though, to do what you want you should prepare the video and audio seperately in an editor first, then bring it in as a background during authoring. This gives you a lot more freedom.Read my blog here.

It is not a big deal to do this kind of menu with GfD.GUI for dvdauthor:

I just made a DVD that had a first play intro clip, music on the menu and no thump clips for tracks just text as buttons. Came out great using GUI for DVD Author.
I want to believe....
