I have the same problem and also have DSL (SBC, now AT&T). The problem is that it disconnects and then reconnects very quickly so you don't really notice it when just browsing but that stops the download.

couple of suggestions/questions
do downloads work fine on another pc using your dsl connection
some universitys and maybe some isps throttle certain ports
what sort of downloads are you talking about
off web pages
torrents
newsgroups
...
if web pages try a different browser (firefox)
or a download manager
gozilla springs to mind but the last time i used it was about 10 years ago when i was last on dial up
how does the dsl connect to your pc is it an internal card or do you put it through a router and connect via usb or ethernet
i once remember a netgear ethernet card i had not liking torrents unless it connected directly to the net (no router)
theres a chance its a hardware conflict
google your components and see if anyone else with them has a similar problem
it may be a case of needing upgraded drivers -
hhhhbk:
it's my home pc. I am using firefox. I tried ie but it was the same thing. I even tried using a proxie on both firefox and ie and same thing.
My dsl is connected through ethernet from a motorola modem.
My pc is 2 weeks old. When i first put it together, it ran fine including all downloads but my hd failed so today i replaced it under warranty and im having this problem. everything else runs and is the same from 2 weeks ago.
i download movie clips or software from download.com. simple stuff i downloaded 2 weeks ago and tried again. Some download and it seems the bigger files dont. -
How are your phone lines? Do you ever get static or lost calls on your land line phone?
If your phone lines are in nearly perfect condition it can mess up a DSL connection.
I mean the phone lines outside your house between you and the phone company routers. Call the phone company or DSL service provider and ask them to check the lines you are on.
Your problem doesn't sound like its related to the harddrive. The only way that I can think of that it could be related to the new harddrive is that you have installed bad drivers or something for your ethernet.snappy phrase
I don't know what you're talking about. -
oooppps my fault.......i apologize
Im cable modem through adelphia, not dsl..sorry -
Call Adelphia tech support, in the meantime get some download manager that can pick up interrupted downloads.
Cable modem also checks for data integrity. If too much corruption occurs on the line it will bring download to a halt due to CRC correction scheme (gets saturated/flooded). -

another possiblity.... you probably have a firewall in place.. disable that and see if you can donwload... if you can.... then some setting in the firewall...
note: in some case... now the cable modem may have it own firewall....... and if your using a seperate fire wall that can cause unusal problems .....!!
another possibilty .. what sort of antispyware or antivirus program your running... some of them the default setting maybe interfer with the download.... so check there default setting...
along with that take a look at your browser secuirty settings..... -
you're not happening to be d/ling your own videos are you?
sometimes, xp will look around and stop the d/l if it already sees it in your box -
Try going to microsoft.com and downloading some large files, like the XP service packs. Don't necessarily need to install them, just download. This is to test known good files from a generally reliable, redundant source. Delete the files and run the test several times.
If this succeeds, then it is most likely your current source. If it fails, then it is most likely your cable modem.
I had some similar issues until they ran a new cable from the pole to my house. First connection was tested and found OK. After three complaint calls, a troubleshooting technician (much more experienced than the installation techs) took one look at the pole and immediately replaced the cable to the house. Something about splices in the cable.
Downloading large file requires SUSTAINED connection quality. Intermittant interruption not noticed in web surfing or small file download, or apparrently in brief monitoring done by install techs. -
Called adelphia tech support today and he checked my line and i did'nt lose any packets. He told me to download a file and see what happens. Everything from his end looked great, again not losing and packets. He said its my pc
checked pc with avg, kaspersky, microtrend, spyware doctor, spybot, adware = nothing
I tried rolling back my hd for the VIA Rhine 2 fast ethernet adapter = no difference
I guess my only option left is to back all my data up and reinstall windows over the existing one?
-
I also noticed alot of broken links to websites timing out?
I tried a download manager and that's just the same thing. Feels like im on a dial up -
If there's someone in your neighborhood (close by) with Adelphia cable modem you can check the cable side by switching modems and thereby also PC's (test your modem somewhere else and bring another one home for a while). Knowing how "helpful" Big Cable often is I have hard time believing what this guy said. You must for a moment assume his position though and eliminate your side as a culprit.
Bypass any router and swap a network card. Similar behavior can occur on an unoptimized TCP/IP stack, bad winsock, corrupted network card drivers. That applies more to older Windows ver. and should be history by now as XP is network friendly. Anyway, uninstalling network card and reinstalling it would be a good start. -

How and where do i do this?

Do you use a router to connect to your cable modem? Some routers have notable disconnects or slowdowns after a period of downloading information. Simply resetting the router seems to correct this.

The 1st thing to check is Anti-virus and firewall something is blocking your downloads. In these days everyone has all kinds of programs running , I bet you have at least 2 or 3 firewalls one from cable company, windows firewall, Norton webfilter came with computer and zone alarm that someone suggested. As some one asked what are you downloading if you can't download anthing period even like free free acrobat or microsoft download it is definitely one of these.

ROF - no router, just cable model directly to pc
INFRATOM - already disabled firewall = same problem -
I doubt this is caused by a firewall (although nothing can be ignored).
To uninstall NIC (network interface card) right click My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager, Network Adapters, right-click on a card, choose uninstall, reboot.
... or physically remove the card from the PC.
In case it's on-board (integrated) go to BIOS (during PC startup press Del) disable network card in Advanced options.
OR
To remove all the networking components from one of your computers first remove the hardware component and then perform the following procedure.
Click Start and then select My Network Places. The My Network Places dialog box appears.
Click View Network Connection in the upper-left pane.
Right-click the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties. The Local Area Connection Properties dialog box appears.
Select the desired client, service, or protocol and click Uninstall.
Click Yes when prompted to confirm the Uninstall.
If prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

Has it ever worked properly on this PC?
How about a previous PC?
Is your browsing OK?
PS. the fact that one guy from tech support said is OK means very little. Try again tech support. They can't leave it like that without any poiters. Are you supposed to keep guessing?
If you cannot get any help with the modem this is what I would do:
either borrow a PC, laptop or put a new install of XP on your PC.
Shrink, create a new partition and install a fresh copy of XP on your system (beside the one you have). Setup will guide you through, choose new installation (on a blank partition). You should have plenty of space. Broadband connection doesn't require any software you can test it right away.
All depends how good you are with PC's and software.
To successfully troubleshoot you need to eliminate either your PC or cable modem. As I said swap the modem with someone and try it or swap a PC (or the operating system). You can remove a new installation of XP from your PC by removing a partition later on. -
Btw. can you check your ping results to the gateway (you can find out by typing ipconfig in XP cmd window) as well as say yahoo.com?
ping localhost, gateway and yahoo. Get wspingpro free trial
http://www.ipswitch.com/products/ws_ping/index.asp
set ping count to more then 100
localhost should be 0, gateway 5-10 ms, yahoo 30/40 (mine) to 100 ms
This is a bit unusual subject but some may find it useful. Everyone at some point had issue with their hispeed connection... -
When you checked with the cable tech what file did you download? Do one that has failed consistently, you want them to see the failure.
Did you do the Microsoft test I suggested? This will basically eliminate the source as the issue if it fails.
Bad cable connection or possibly bad NIC. NIC are cheap, $20 to $30 dollars. R and R the present one, if no help try a second, brand new card. If that fails, call the cable company and tell them either get it working or bring a basket to collect the pieces. -

They usually can check the modem remotely from the serial number, as long as the line itself is clean. Call the tech-sup. and have them check remotely, but have the modem disconnected & off first. If they don't see it, they'll have you run through a power down process, blah blah blah, which you will fake anyway. If they say they can connect to it, they have a problem. Next turn it on wihtout connecting your PC. They should be able to see the modem. If they see use with you disconnected, they have a problem. Connect your pc and redo the power-up of the modem accordingly. Make sure you're not running any programs that use the internet. The tech should have a clear signal showing. If not, you have a problem somewhere in your PC you need to run a diagnostic for.
