I have installed as many codecs as i can think of. Can anyone suggest a program or some codecs that play most files? I have vlc xvid divx bs player already. Apologies if it seems a stupid request

Do NOT install codecs willy nilly. They are likely to conflict and mess up your system.

Download and install GSpot, and check what codecs does the AVI use, THEN download specific codecs that will resolve your problem.

I thought VLC used its own codecs ?

Media Player Classic might be a player to try as it is also highly regarded.

But yeah .... what kschang said re: codecs and GSpot / AVICodec / VideoInspector.
    If in doubt, Google it.

VLC does. However it basically only uses OS libs for decoding so there are still various propritary formats that it doesn't support.
