I've been searching through the Compatibility list for hours, my eyes are bloodshot and my brain hurts. What's the best player in the "cheap" category that can play Verbatim DVD+R DL discs?

Dude you can't buy a "quality" DVD player in that price range.

You basically are stuck with the Cyberhome 300 which can be bought from BEST BUY amoung other places or Magnavox makes a similiar unit that I've seen at WAL-MART

Other than that it's all no name brands that probably work half ass at that price range.

I have heard that the Sony DVP-NS50P does DVD+R DL just fine but it costs around $80.00

  3. The Toshiba SD-3990 plays DVD+R DL Media without any problems.

The one comment that I made in the player section was due to an error when I authored my first DL disc. Others that I have made play fine.

This player also plays DivX/Xvid files.

It's a little more than $50 at most sites, but there is one listed that sells it for $49.99. I'm quite happy with it, and it's worth looking into.

Toshiba makes nice players, but don't expect to pay less than $50 unless it's some super-duper sale (like Black Friday).

I clicked on Best Prices on the SD-3990. Crutchfield is selling it for $49.99

    http://www.crutchfield.com/S-038mQ2JBYJe/cgi-bin/prodview.asp?i=052SD3990

With shipping, it comes to $56.98. I paid $56.99 + 8.1% sales tax (Total $61.61) and picked it up at Best Buy.

    Not too bad either way.

Just ordered the 3990 from Crutchfield, now I just need to pick up some component and coax digital cables (currently use S-Video and optical)

A bunch of nerds argue over which is better ... coax digital or optical digital ... but at the end of the day you will never be able to hear the difference.

If you already have optical then there is no reason to switch to coax unless you "must" and by "must" I mean that some DVD players only have one type or the other ... even though it does seem most DVD players have both types of outputs.

It did occur to me that maybe the Toshiba you bought only has coax out and not optical out but my point is they are the same quality wise so no need to change "just for the heck of it" if you know what I mean

Yep, I knew all that. The Toshiba has only coax digital output. For this room, I don't need the best of the best anyhow, it's a family room.
